How to Prep Your Skin in the Days Before Your Wedding (So Your Makeup Looks Flawless)

The best wedding makeup doesn’t start with makeup at all — it starts with skin. As a bridal artist, I can always tell the difference between a canvas that’s been prepped in advance and one that hasn’t, no matter how good the products are. Here’s the simple timeline I recommend to every bride.

Two to Four Weeks Before

This is the time for any bigger changes — facials, dermatologist visits, or trying a new skincare routine. Avoid trying brand-new products or treatments closer to the wedding, since skin can react unpredictably and you don’t want to be dealing with irritation days before.

The Final Week

Focus on hydration, inside and out. Drink more water than usual, and if you exfoliate, do it gently — this is not the week for a strong chemical peel or an aggressive scrub. A calm, well-hydrated face holds makeup far better than dry or freshly-irritated skin.

Stick to your regular routine 2-3 days before. No new products, no last-minute experiments. Sleep is the biggest beauty tool you have this week — aim for consistency over anything dramatic.

The Night Before and Wedding Morning

A gentle cleanse, a hydrating mask if your skin tolerates it well, and an early night. Avoid alcohol and very salty foods, both of which can leave skin looking puffy the next morning.

On wedding morning, keep it simple — cleanse, hydrate, and let your skin breathe before I arrive for your bridal hair and makeup. A heavy, unfamiliar moisturizer right before makeup application can actually interfere with how foundation sits on the skin.

The goal of all of this isn’t perfect skin — it’s calm, hydrated, well-rested skin that gives makeup something smooth and even to work with. That’s what allows a soft, radiant finish that holds up beautifully in photos and lasts through your entire celebration.
